FAQ

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a dynamic health care profession with an established theoretical and scientific base. Physiotherapy has widespread clinical application and is concerned with human function and movement, and maximising physical potential.
Cherrybrook Physiotherapists are highly skilled professionals who:

  • Are extensively trained in the assessment, diagnosis and comprehensive management of all musculoskeletal problems
  • Use hands on treatment techniques to promote, restore and maintain physical function
  • Provide advice on self management and exercises to maintain well-being
  • Promote optimal quality of life as it relates to each individual

Physiotherapy treatment techniques are aimed at removing muscular, joint and nerve symptoms from either acute or chronic injuries. They restore normal function and mobility and provide patients with skills to help manage their problem long term.

Cherrybrook Physiotherapists have extensive training in injury mechanism, pathology and rehabilitation which allows them to provide the most reliable and evidence based advice and treatment for musculoskeletal disorders.

Using a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, education, lifestyle advice, soft tissue techniques, and electro-physical modalities, our Physiotherapists strive to enhance health and maximise potential.

Physiotherapy is science-based. Clinical skills and judgments are continually developed and updated after reviewing and evaluating the research evidence that underpins the profession.

Do I need a Doctor’s referral?

While their doctor refers many clients to physio, it is not necessary and family and friends have recommended many of our clients at Cherrybrook. The Therapists at Cherrybrook Physiotherapy are all qualified and registered with APHRA thus able to treat patients without medical referral. Physiotherapy is an autonomous profession, and we act as first-contact practioners. If you are able to claim a rebate for physiotherapy services from a private health fund, this is possible without a medical referral.

A medical referral from your general practitioner is necessary only if:

  • You have been injured at work and your case is being managed by workcover
  • Your treatment is covered by Veterans Affairs
  • You are claiming your treatment expenses through a 3rd party claim.

Your physiotherapist is also able to refer you on to other medical and allied health professionals where appropriate. We liaise closely with GP’s & Specialists, Coaches & Trainers, and all Health Professionals.

Can I claim a rebate for my treatment?

If you have private health cover and subscribe to the “extras” cover you should be eligible to claim part of your treatment fee. There are many different schemes and you are best advised to check your level of cover with your insurer.

If you are covered, most health funds are online with HICAPS. This is a service we provide for your convenience. It allows you to claim your health fund rebate at our clinic, leaving only the gap to pay. You will need to bring your health fund card with you.

Medicare now offers Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Programmes to allow a Medicare rebate for up to 5 physio treatments a year. The programme is for people with chronic conditions, patients must be referred by their GP. If you have any queries regarding this service please don’t hesitate to speak with our admin staff.

What happens at my first treatment?

Following an initial comprehensive assessment, a full objective examination and hands on assessment with functional testing is performed to establish a diagnosis. You are welcome to ask any questions you may have.

Treatment may involve different ways of relieving pain, restoring function, flexibility and strength. Skills and techniques used may include mobilisations of joints and or soft tissues, manipulation, postural correction, electrotherapy, exercises and muscle rehabilitation.

You will also learn techniques to use at home to manage your problem, which may include exercise and preventative measures.

At Cherrybrook we also liaise with others involved in your care if applicable and will refer you for alternative treatment if Physiotherapy is not the best option.

How long do treatments take?

An initial consultation for one problem will take approximately 45 minutes. If you have multiple areas or a complex problem it is best to allow 60 minutes (please let our reception staff know this at the time of booking).

A follow on consultation will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

As a new client we would appreciate if you could arrive 10minutes prior to your appointment to allow time to fill out relevant paperwork.

Our physios strive to keep to their appointment schedule, but there may be occasional unforeseen circumstances.
